In light of the risk that the offshore tropical depression would develop into a full tropical cyclone and hit Fiji at the start of the week, Fiji National University decided to postpone the graduation ceremonies scheduled for yesterday and today as a precaution.

This was a very difficult decision to take and FNU understand the disappointment and frustration it caused to graduating students and their families, as well as the staff.

FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey said: “In a year dominated by the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone  Winston, you will appreciate that the safety of our students is the University’s paramount concern.

“It is now clear that, despite very heavy rain and localised flooding over the weekend, the tropical cyclone has failed to materialise.

“The University’s senior management convened first thing yesterday morning to reschedule graduation and minimise the inconvenience to graduating students and their families.

“We know that many students and staff have suffered flooding in their homes and travelling conditions may make it difficult to attend the rescheduled ceremonies.”

All students who are eligible to graduate in December 2016 will be automatically graduated in absentia if they are unable to attend the ceremonies.

For students enquiring about returning graduation gowns or requesting a refund for tickets purchased, they can contact the Graduation co-ordinator on by telephone: 339-4000 Ex. 2406 or email: gc@fnu.ac.fj

The university has contacted all graduating students to make them aware of the revised schedule and their options if they are unable to attend.

“I am deeply sorry for the disruption caused by the weather to our graduation ceremonies, which are the highlight of the academic year,” Mr Healey said.

“I would like to thank our University staff and our graduating students and families for their understanding and the hard work that has taken place to reschedule events.”
