Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama last night appealed to people to heed the warning to stay away from flooded areas.

He said concerns were raised by the Minister for Health Rosy Akbar in a Cabinet briefing by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) in Suva that people were ignoring the advice.

He cited the case of a vehicle driven by a Police officer with three passengers being swept away by floodwaters in Rakiraki. They were lucky to survive after they abandoned the car and swam to safety.

He said people should not go swimming, fishing or cross flooded rivers or streams

Mr Bainimarama said he had instructed the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, to visit schools and the school managers and prepare the schools for evacuation so there was no abuse.

He said the Police and the army would supervise the security.
