Clinkers Offloaded

The bulk carrier MV Festival off loaded 22,000 tonnes of cement clinkers at the Port of Suva.

According to Carpenters Shipping Boarding Agent Tomu Raturaga the MV Festival would not berth but would be at Suva Harbour unloading to a barge to transport the clinkers to the cement factory in Lami.

He said the clinkers were loaded from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Wikipedia says that clinker, if stored in dry conditions, can be kept for several months without appreciable loss of quality. Because of this, and because it can easily be handled by ordinary mineral handling equipment, clinker is traded internationally in large quantities.

Meanwhile other vessels that berthed at the Port of Suva included the Micronesian Chief, Papuan Chief, Islander, car vessel Grand Mark. A Fiji Sun source said the car vessel off loaded 1023 cars.
