Farming for more than eight years, Mukesh Maharaj said he had lost all his crops within the last few days.

“This is my source of income and this is how I am supporting my family,” he said.

Mr Maharaj of Koronivia near the Nausori town has three children with whom two are studying at Bhawani Dayal Memorial School.

The vegetable farmer yesterday walked around his farm with all the thoughts of where and how to start his farm again inspecting all the damage.

“All the energy and money I have used in this farm and especially monitoring my vegetables these last few months have been wasted. It was just for nothing,” he said.

The 46-year-old said now it would take him another six to seven months to recover the loss and it was a long time for him.

“It will cost me another $2000 to start the farm again,” he said.

“Ploughing and paying labourers to come and plant will cost me but before that I will need to look for my seeds first.”

He was expecting to harvest in January but now all his plans had been shattered especially his plans for the new academic year when he had to be preparing for his children’s education.
