Adverse weather conditions in the country has resulted in the postponement of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour which was to be held in Pacific Harbour on January 13–  14.

Fiji Volleyball Federation president Elesi Ketedromo said due to the tropical depression and major flooding in the country during the last five days, they have had to postpone the event.

Ketedromo said they met with the event promoters Yatu Lau Company Limited and have rescheduled the event for March 24 – 25.

“This is the first time Fiji is hosting such a world event and international and Oceania teams have confirmed their participation, “ Ketedromo said.

She said teams like Estonia and United States of America are some of the teams that have confirmed their participation.

The five-star structure starting with the 2017 FIVB World Tour is one of the many steps taken by the FIVB to modernize and streamline its competitions in a golden period for beach volleyball on the heels of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça in an earlier report stated that the aim of the new structure is to provide a platform and formation of events that increase the number of competitions in a growing number of hosting countries and create a sustainable business model while providing additional commercial flexibility and opportunities.

Pacific Harbour was chosen as the venue for the world event as it lives up to its reputation as a spot for thrill seekers, offering a wide variety of activities, from surfing and shark feeding to four-wheel-drive tours. There is also a championship golf course and abundant fishing, a good range of accommodation types, from budget offerings to some of Fiji’s finest hotels, and plenty of dining options.

The 2017 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Major Series, 5-star, 4-star, 3-star, 2-star and 1-star events along with additional pre-approved events at the inter-continental, continental and national levels.

Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
