Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, yesterday was briefed on the progress of the rebuilding of schools under the Adopt A School programme at the Tropical Cyclone Winston Situation Room in Suva.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the PM was given an update on the programme.

He said the update was on the numbers of schools under the programme, the number of tenders given out, the process of tendering, process of documentation and record keeping which was essential for audit purposes.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the PM was fully briefed on the process because he was keen to find out where they were at.

He said many of the schools under the programme didn’t have any blueprints.

“They don’t have any drawings at all, so the drawings had to be redone from scratch. Even if they did have a drawing, what was on the drawing and what was on the ground was different,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said in some areas, schools were put into clusters.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they were working with various engineering firms from the private sector to carry out the construction works.

“So there is a very high level of documentation and detailed information for the blueprint.

“A number of other tenders should be awarded in a couple of weeks.

“The Government tender boards has its own schedule , they are independent, they carry out their own work,” he said.
