Marist Rugby Club aims to discuss with the Fiji Rugby Union the possibility of using the 41st Fijian Bitter Marist Sevens next year as a selection ground for the national squad for the Hong Kong 7s.

Club president Lawrence Tikaram said the tournament will be bigger and better in March and the initiative to make it a selection platform for the seventh leg of the World Sevens Series in April will increase competition.

“I believe it will provide competition among the players to perform even better knowing the selectors will be there,” Tikaram said.

“It will also be a great time to welcome our new coach Gareth Baber to our tournament like we did with Ben Ryan.

“A key factor for the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens next year is that we have invited World Rugby and Oceania Rugby to be part of the tournament.

“We will extend an invitation to them to come and witness and to see how its run and hopefully it will help build bridges not only for the tournament itself but for the development of rugby in general.”

Tikaram said they will also hold a special cocktail for the coaches and captains prior to the tournament as well as developing sports administration for team managers.

“A strong administration leads to a strong team and we want the managers to play a more active role.

“This will be in terms of the running of the tournament to give us better coordination and better timing to make sure we agree to the time changes for the matches they are scheduled on.”

Tikaram acknowledged Fiji Bitter for their continued support.

“This marriage between Marist Club and Fiji Bitter has contributed, in a huge way, for us winning gold at the Rio Olympics this year.

“We work closely together not only for the development of rugby but for sport in general across Fiji and without sponsors we cannot organise and run big events like this.”

The Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens will be held on March 24-25 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
