Fiji Sun journalist Litia Tikomailepanoni was travelling to the Sand Dunes on the Coral Coast from Nadi yesterday when the van she was travelling in hit a horse which ran in front of it.

Ms Tikomailepanoni said: “I am traumatised more than I am physically injured because of the accident.

“We were travelling to the Sand Dunes to cover the Fijiana team’s training when the horse jumped in front of our vehicle all of a sudden.

“The driver could not control the vehicle and collided with the horse.”

She said as a result the driver sustained serious injuries and the horse ended up lying on the road.

She said she was saved from serious injuries because she was wearing her seat belt.

“I have escaped serious injuries but wounded my leg while the driver is in serious condition due to impact of the collision on the driver’s side of the vehicle,” Ms Tikomailepanoni said.

Police director of traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Mishra said drivers should take proper control of the vehicle.

“And they must ensure safety elements while travelling.People should be careful and pay attention on the road.

It is the responsibility  and duty of the owners of the animals to be careful .”

“Sometimes it is the driver’s negligence, bad driver attitude and over speeding that results to incidents involving animals.

“The Police force has put out there to be cautious and not to over speed while driving especially in the animal zoning to save themselves and the animals,” Mr Mishra said.

Ms Tikomailepanoni has been discharged from the hospital while the driver is  admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.
