RFMF Engineers Return, Give Qamea Assessment

A team of engineers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa have returned from Dreketi Village in Qamea after conducting their damage assessment.

This was after a massive landslide had greatly altered the village set up last weekend.

The RFMF has confirmed that they have returned from the island and the report has been submitted to the Commissioner Northern’s office in Labasa.

In an interview with RFMF Chief of Staff Colonel Litea Seruiratu said the RFMF was on standby awaiting decisions on other tasks.

“The 13 engineers deployed to Qamea were from the Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa and they have done the task required,” Colonel Seruiratu said.

“The team was sent to do an assessment and that report has been submitted to the Commissioner Northern’s office.

“Based on the report we have submitted to the Commissioner Northern we are ready to do whatever task they need us to do and we will do it.”

She said the team was sent to the island on Wednesday and they returned on Thursday.

Dreketi Village on Qamea had been declared a disaster area after the landslide on Sunday.

The Qamea Health Centre, Laucala District School, the Dreketi Village Hall and six other homes were destroyed in the wake of the massive landslide.

Half the village is buried in mud and more than half of the villagers have fled to other locations for shelter.
