About 13 new cases of domestic violence and child sexual abuse have been reported over the festive season.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) coordinator, Shamima Ali said there was an increasing trend including domestic violence restraining orders and repeat clients.

“A lot of the violence is around financial matters, especially if the man cannot support his family, that becomes a problem,” Ms Ali said.

She said the Centre had been dealing with such cases.

She encouraged women to seek help even though it could be difficult. The Crisis Centre has a 24 hour helpline with trained counsellors available.

“If you cannot get to a Crisis Centre, go to a Police station nearest you.”

One of the highlights for the FWCC this year has been its partnership with Government, particularly with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

“The local and island communities as well have been very responsive in inviting us to create awareness on these issues,” Ms Ali said.

FWCC’s goal for 2017 is to work more with civil servants. One of their major projects is the setting up of three main shelters in Labasa, Ba, and Suva.

Ms Ali said the temporary shelters would provide safety for families suffering from domestic violence.
