Ex – service man, Ilimotama Rakavono said he was fortunate to witness the opening of the new seawall at his village in Kumi, Verata, Tailevu, yesterday.

The 89-year-old was among people who gathered at the village to celebrate the official opening of the seawall by Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

“Today is one of the happiest days of my life, to witness the opening of the village new seawall.

“For the past decades my people have been suffering from the threats of rising seas. There were no sea walls to protect homes near the shore.

“I was filled with joy when I saw the Prime Minister officially opening the new sea wall and it is a day of celebrations for us. What better way to wait for the New Year? he said.

Mr Rakavono said he was among Fijian troops deployed to Malaya (now Malaysia) in 1952 during the campaign against Communist terrorists.

“I served in Malaya for four years before I returned to Fiji and every day I would pass down this story to my grand-children and great-grandchildren. Today will go down in history for me too, witnessing the long waited sea wall.

“I am getting old and if it is God’s will that I am called to rest tomorrow than I would be at peace knowing that the future generation of this village are safe from the threats of rising seas,” he said.

Mr Rakavono advised villagers of Kumi to preserve their environment to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Turaga Ni Yavusa o Yasa, Ratu Ilaitia Ravasakula thanked Government for its assistance.

“We didn’t use any single cent in the construction of the new seawall. Today we want to thank the Government for this project and I believe that it will benefit the future generation of this village,” he said.
