The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama says the new seawall in Kumi Village, Verata, in Tailevu will protect its villagers from the threat of rising seas.

He said it gave them knowledge that their progress won’t be washed away.

He made these remarks while opening the seawall. He said that peace of mind was something that no one could put a price on.

Mr Bainimarama said the new seawall and concrete walkway would keep the land and villagers of Kumi protected from the surging tides that threatened their community.

Commissioner Central Setareki Talei said it took two years for the seawall to be constructed at a cost of  $400,000.

He said the construction of seawalls would be continuing projects for Government in vulnerable areas.

Mr Bainimarama reassured villagers that his Government would continue to find ways to work with the community to help them succeed and that they would be unyielding on the global stage in their efforts to protect Fiji, and the entire world, from the consequences of climate change.

“And any of you who have spent your lives in this community can testify that – over the years – rains have become more torrential, the sea rises higher and your village faces unprecedented threats from severe weather events,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama said the story of Kumi and many other villages and settlements was one that he often talked about on the international stage when alerting nations to the peril we face in the Pacific.

Village headman Jona Koroiwaqa said the new seawall would prevent villagers from dumping their rubbish on the shore and protect them from the threat of rising sea level.
