Players will have to fight to earn a place in the Uluinakau 7s team as they prepare for the Mana Whey Fijian Coral Coast 7s tournament on January 18-21 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.

Uluinaka Club president Epi Kolinivala said they are aiming to continue the momentum into the New Year as they have their final trials today at Bidesi Ground.

“This will be the fourth time we will be taking part in the Coral Coast 7s and we are really looking forward to perform and be competitive,” Kolinivala said.

“At the moment we are still in the processing stage since we have a few new faces.

“This year we managed to reach the final of the Central Coast 7s in Australia which is a really big boost for us.

“Knowing that we reached the finals in the Central Coast 7s has driven us to do the same in the Coral Coast.

“These boys have to prove themselves, at the moment they are fighting for their spot, not all of them are guaranteed a spot and they know that very well.

“We will be having our final trials and from a squad of 24, we will cut it down to 12 and move into camp.

“So we are pretty excited about that and about getting down to business.”

Kolinivala is hoping Fiji 7s reps Josua Vici, Setareki  Bituniyata and Waisea Nacuqu are released to join the team in the Coral Coast 7s as they were part of the team during the Central Coast Sevens.

However, while they are hoping to join the squad, Kolinivala said they will not be relying on the Fiji reps.

“We have three players in the Fiji national team who have not been with us but we do hope they get released to play with us,” he said.

“At the same time, whether they get released or not we are not going to rely on them, we have capable of players and those who are interested so we will see what we will be dealing with.

“We want to pick the best players to do the job because we know the tournament will definitely be tough with most of the teams coming will be well prepared.”

The Coral Coast 7s will be held at Lawaqa Park on January 18-21.
