Vodafone Fijian Under-20 rugby captain Eroni Mawi aims for a spot in the Telecom Fijian Warriors squad in 2017.

Mawi, 20, played his last match for the Fijian U20 side against Tonga earlier this month and said this year was a good learning experience for him.

“This is my last year to be with the U20 team and I have been through a lot of challenges especially with injuries.

“Another challenge was trying to control 26 men on the field in my capacity as a captain it was not an easy job but we all went through with it together as a team,” Mawi said.

The Tovu, Totoya, Lau native commended his grandmother for her support towards his rugby career.

“My grandmother Alena Mawi is my biggest mentor, she always encourages me and advised me to work hard and keep pushing myself.

“I also want to thank God for giving me the strength during preparation period, it was not an easy road but all glory goes back to him.

“There are a lot of challenges ahead in 2017 but I’ve faith in myself that 2017 will be another successful year,” he added.

The Lau native’s biggest fear this year was decision making.

“To lead a team is a hard and for me my biggest challenge this year was to make the right decision at the right time,” Mawi said.

“And I’m happy I did my best.”
