Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) assistant coach Christophe Gamel is the new coach for the Fijian national soccer team.

This was confirmed by Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel who said Gamel tops the list after the final interview.

Good reviews from Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) technical department and director Patrick Jacquemet made the decision to select Gamel.

“We have finalised the coaching position and it is Christophe Gamel, he is based in France and he will be our new coach,” Patel said.

“We got a good report from the OFC who have had nothing but good things to say about him and we are happy with the reports we have received.

“Once he arrives into the country he will get straight into action, we will be finalising a few things in regards to contracts.

“It will be a busy year for us next year starting with our national team playing against the All Whites on March 25 in Govind Park, Ba.

“It is important that we improve our ranking in 2017 as well and we are pleased with the year that we have had.

“Starting off the year with a new coach is a good start for us.”

Gamel lives in Paris, France and has an impressive sporting background and qualifications. He is a professional football coach and has a Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Pro-license.

PSG is considered one of the top clubs in France and has won 31 titles making it the most successful club in France.

He has also coached Al-Rayyan which is a professional sports club in Qatar and has also coached the Qatar national football team in 2009-2010. He also coached Diósgyőri VTK which is a Hungarian soccer club.

Gamel not only coached but also played football, he was a member of the A.S.D. Nuova Cassino 1924 which is an Italian football club from Cassino, Lazio. He was with the club from 2002-2005.

He arrives next Friday.
