While many people will be welcoming 2017 tonight, the Fiji Police Force will be out and about, intending to ensure people follow the road safety rules.

Police director of traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahesh Mishra said: “Our main objective is for the public to enjoy the New Year’s celebrations.

“The Fiji Police Force will be in numbers on the streets and as far as traffic enforcement, and road safety is concern, we will try our best to provide a safe road environment through the support and co-operation of the general public and all road users.

“Those who are taking chances of drinking and driving, and those who are trying to conduct bad driving behaviour, we will have a zero tolerance on that,” he said.

SSP Mishra said they will ensure the full brunt of the law takes its course against those drivers driving under the influence of alcohol or being reckless, negligent or arrogant on the road.

SSP Mishra also wished the public a Happy New Year and has urged people to act responsibly.
