For the past five years, Satya Lingam has spent more than $150,000 on kidney dialysis treatment.

The 62-year-old is also the Dialysis Assistance Welfare Association interim general secretary.

Mr Lingam said members of the association had gathered yesterday at the Kidney Foundation of Fiji  in Suva to distribute $100 to each of their members.

He said there were around 70 members in the Association.

Mr Lingam said the number of members joining the association had increased compared to when it was initially established.

He said kidney dialysis treatment was costly and some of their members could not afford it.

Mr Lingam said one session costs more than $200.

“We have written to various stakeholders to assist us with fundraising for treatment costs for our members. We have also come together in organising fundraising towards this initiative,” Mr Lingam said.

“The dialysis is the only way to keep us surviving. We have to undergo the treatment three times a week which in a year will cost around $30,000. Patients have to use their own money.

“I have been on dialysis for the last six years and  it has cost me so much, but we have no choice,” he said.

Mr Lingam said that in a week, one person dies from kidney failure and most those people were the ones who could not afford dialysis.
