While the majority of the population were preparing to welcome the New Year, some parents were more focused on sending their children back to school.

Post Fiji Shop in Suva was packed with parents shopping for school supplies for their young ones.

Koronivia resident and mother of two Anjenesh Lata said school supplies were her first priority before anything else.

“My husband is a mechanic and the sole bread winner of the house,” the 31-year-old said.

“While trying to manage bills, groceries and other expenses in his pay, I have put my daughters’ education my first priority.

“Sometimes, it gets difficult for me to manage everything with their school and my household expenses, but I also try and sort everything out so I can cater for everyone in my family.”

Nandika Chandra will be attending Year 4 and Pranisha Chandra in Year 2 at Nakaikogo Sanatan Dharam Primary School in Lokia, Rewa.

Yacata islander Leanaitasi Vanavana, 47, travelled to Suva to shop for his only son’s school supplies.

“My son is going to attend Year 9 at Vunimono High School in Nausori and I travelled all the way here to shop the best supplies for my son,” Mr Vanavana said.

“Since we come from a remote island, we hardly have much facility for better supplies as my wife is the only one working and I work on my small farm to cater for our family.

“My son will be living with our relatives in Nausori which will be hard for us because he is our only child but I know it is for his future.”
