The chief guest at the Seaqaqa Street Party on New Year’s Eve told about 1000 revellers in the sugar cane township to be bold and optimistic in the new year.

Bua and Macuata Police Districts officer in-charge Inspector Patemosi Wate was optimistic for 2017 with the challenges, obstacles and opportunities that came with it.

“Our nation is mighty and people are bold and optimistic,” Inspector Wate said.

“The world looks to us as an example that we never hesitate to step up to our responsibility and together we can achieve anything.

“I would like to encourage you all to let us begin this year with confidence.”

The party organising committee chairman, Lakhan Kumar, said they have been organising this for over six years.

“Seaqaqa is a sugar cane farming dominated area and many people live very far away from the main shopping centre,” Mr Kumar said.

“Although there was no bus service in the night, people came with their families and sat on the mat enjoying entertainment waiting to welcome the New Year as a community.

“Witnessing large crowds of people from all over Vanua Levu has encouraged us to plan much better and bigger street party for next year.”

The main sponsor for this street party, Seaqaqa Shopping Centre Limited director Hasim Khan said he felt honoured to be part of the programme and would continue to provide sponsorship.

“I think that an event such as a street party that brings together people should be supported and I welcome other business committees to join us,” Mr Khan said.
