Case Adjourned For Man Charged With Child Stealing And Resisting Arrest

A 36-year-old man fronted the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday charged with a count each of child stealing and resisting arrest.
Melvin Atish Ram appeared before Magistrate Sufia Humza.
It is alleged that on December 31, 2016, at Nasinu, Ram unlawfully and by force took away a one-year-old baby, with the intention of depriving the parent.
Police Prosecutor Constable Raymond Filipe objected to bail on the grounds that the first charge was a serious offence.
Constable Filipe also told the court that in Kinoya Police officers came close to sustaining injuries while trying to stop the vehicle driven by Ram.
He also asked the court to issue a domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) for the protection of the child.
Defence lawyer Mukesh Nand has filed submissions to which the prosecution is required to answer.
The case has been adjourned to January 6 for mention. Edited by Naisa Koroi
