The New Year celebrations turned grim yesterday for Eshwini Lata’s family of Vatamai, Lovu, Lautoka, as their three-bedroom house was destroyed by fire which started around 9:45am.

Eshwini’s father, Anil Kumar, who lives in the same compound, said that Eshwini, his son-in-law and children were out in their vegetable farm a few metres away from their house when the incident occurred.

“At that time everyone had went out to the farms and nobody was at my daughter’s residence,” Mr Kumar said.

“Me and my granddaughter were at my place when she came rushing to me alerting me of the smoke coming out of the house.

“We were not able to save anything as the house was filled with thick smoke.”

According to Mr Kumar, the fire had started from one of the bedrooms but was still unsure how the fire started.

“The three-bedroom corrugated iron and wooden structure took just 30 minutes to be destroyed by the flames,” he said.

The family managed to salvage their car from the flames with the help of a tractor.

“The keys of the car was inside the house, we had to tie a rope to a tractor and pull the car out of the garage to save it from the flames,” Mr Kumar said.

“Despite this the car still got partially damaged, especially the wind shield.”

Mr Kumar said that his daughter, son-in-law and four children had shifted to his house after the incident.

The Kumar family is still waiting for the National Fire Authority’s approval to clean and rebuild the house.

Investigations are still underway to find out the cause of the fire.
