Ten Rape Charges Top Last Month’s Sexual Offences

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.
This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.
There were 11 people charged with a total of 14 separate incidents in December. The offences were rape (10), abduction with intent to rape (1) and sexual assault (3).
Of the 11 accused persons charged, four were under the age of 18 years.
There were 10 victims of the 14 separate incidents.
There were a total of seven victims of serious sexual offences under the age of 18 years.
The youngest victim was four years old and the accused was a 23 year old man.
There were two sexual offences that occurred where the victims were related to the accused person.
One matter was discontinued after a discontinuance (Nolle Prosequi) was filed.
