Kamieli Cakau said he lost more than $2000 worth of items in the flash flood following heavy rain yesterday.

The 58-year-old said he was at work when his family called him on the phone about the flood.

When the Fiji Sun team arrived at Mr Cakau’s home in Naibuluvatu, Kalabu, the family were cleaning up their house and moving wet furniture.

“When I came home, I saw my house flooded. I was shocked, but thankful that my family members are safe,” he said.

The water was about half a metre deep and had entered their home.

“I am working on the construction of my new washroom behind my house, now all the concrete blocks, tiles and woods that I bought are gone. It’s quite a loss for me,” he said.

“This has never happened before.”

Mr Cakau has been living in his home with his wife and four children. He works at the Standard Concrete Company in Kalabu.

He said the flood was the result of the heavy rain and high tide.

“My youngest son, Jone Navakasui is studying at Fiji National University and school will resume soon. I need to prepare him with his school needs and at the same time fix the damage in my house,” he said.
