A video of a youth group in Lami has gone viral on social media.

Thirty to 40 boys from Waigasa settlement in Lami have become celebrities overnight.

Known as the Washington Crew, their video has gone viral after being uploaded on social media on Tuesday.

As a tradition every New Year’s they would march around the Lami area beating their empty bottles, rods, empty cylinders, and tins.

When Fiji Sun caught up with the crew on Wednesday, the boys were in Delainavesi serenading the neighbourhood there.

Leader of the crew, Timoci Delana, was excited about their video going viral.

“As a way to welcome the New Year, me and the boys would go around and play with our drums with any beat we can come up with around Lami,” he said.

Mr Delana said it was the first time they had played at RB Harbour Point in Suvavou where their video was made.

Tertiary student Narada Sharma, who’s responsible for the viral video, was shopping with her mum on Tuesday at a supermarket in Lami when she heard the beating of drums outside.

“Everybody went outside to check these boys, they were playing random beats and so everyone got their cameras out,” Ms Sharma said.

Ms Sharma said she was walking towards her car when the idea of actually doing a video for her Facebook page came up.

“I got my phone out and started recording and a lady started dancing in the middle of it all,” she said.

She wasn’t expecting it to go viral though, with 10, 000 likes, 2100 comments, 3500 shares and 150,000 views on Facebook.

Ms Sharma said  what fascinated her with the Washington Crew was boys as young as five or six were part of the crew.
