Fijian football national coach Christophe Gamel knows the challenges involved in his new role.

The Frenchman made the comment after he was greeted by Fiji Football Association’s Tarunesh Reddy, Ravinesh Kumar and major sponsor Vodafone Fiji’s Shamal Sharma at the Nadi International Airport yesterday.

“I’m very happy, I’m ready and I’ve to adapt myself very fast,” he said.

Gamel replaced Australian Frank Farina who was sacked after the team’s poor performance at the Rio Olympics last year.

“It’s a big challenge. I know there are a lot of expectations but I’ve to be focused on what I’m able to do. Just like the travel I’ve just made, it will be one long trip and big work.”

The Frenchman is adamant to achieve his goal in lifting the profile of the sport.

“We’ve to be very clear, very focused on our objective. I’ve seen good talents and most of all I want to see is the spirit, this is for me the most important.

“We will try to work more on the specifics, tactics and techniques to improve so that the players can express themselves well.”

He is a professional football coach and has a Union of European Football Associations Pro-license.

Long term

“I need to plan with Avinesh (Kumar) on the future and directives to follow.

National team march into camp

Fiji FA vice- president and national team director Tarunesh Reddy said the national team march into camp on January 15 at the Football Academy in Ba.

“It’s all up to him now on how he wants to plan and take Fiji forward,” Reddy said.
