Three men appeared yesterday in the Nausori Magistrates Court charged with the murder of a 46-year-old fisherman, Jay Prasad, in Lokia Landing in Rewa last Sunday.

Niko Baleiwariki, 21, Eroni Raivani, 24, and Waisea Motonivalu, 32, appeared before Magistrate Vandhana Lal.

The trio has been charged with one count each of murder and aggravated robbery.

It is alleged the trio brutally assaulted the victim before stealing his 15 horsepower Yamaha outboard engine.

The victim was taken to the Nausori Health Centre where he later died

Raivani and Motonivalu asked to defend themselves while Baleiwariki sought for Legal Aid assistance.

Prosecutor Yogesh Prasad from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution objected to the bail application.

Mr Prasad said it was a strong case against all three accused and this was for their own protection because of the sensitivity of the case.

He said there was great tension in the community where the three accused lived.

Magistrate Lal told the accused they could make a fresh application for bail in the High Court in Suva.

The trio have been remanded in custody and will appear on January 20 at the High Court.

At least 150 people were outside the Nausori courthouse to catch a glimpse of the three men and attend proceedings.
