The Tosovata Women’s Group honey project has changed the livelihood of 20 women at Bulileka Village in Labasa.

The Minister for Agriculture, Inia Seruiratu, was impressed when he was briefed about the group’s project during his North tour.

Group leader Vasiti Lewaseni said she was thankful to the Ministry of Agriculture for providing them with technical advisory services and 20 double-honey boxes.

“We began with this project last year and after six months we harvested about four 20 litres of honey,” Ms Lewaseni said.

“We sold it to the market outlet which is Northern Bee Farmers Co-operatives for $1200.

“Each woman received $100 from this and then we started selling more honey.

“Our group even managed to deposit $700 into the savings account at HFC bank.”

Ms Lewaseni said the club members were unemployed young girls and house wives of Bulileka Village.

“Through this honey project, women have been empowered as they now feel they are businesswomen,” Ms Lewaseni said.

“This project brought together women to work in unity and at least provide something for their family after receiving the shares from the profits.”

The Turaga ni Mataqali of Wailailai, Epeli Deama, said he donated his two-acre land to the group so that they could start their project.

“When it comes to improving the living standard and working together as a community, I feel proud to offer my help,” Mr Deama said.

“The women are able to help their families and as I have been told that they are saving money.

“I am confident that in time of emergency these women will surely come forward to help the village.

“I just want to thank the Government for giving hope to rural people.”
