U17 Play PNG, Maori

Two of the teams they will face are the Papua New Guinea and New Zealand Maori U17 teams.

Coach Shalen Lal said they need to prepare the players mentally and physically.

“We are rounding up preparations as we only have a week left to prepare,” Lal said.

“We don’t just go there to play but to compete.

“After being in the development phase for a whole year, we are transitioning into competition mode so the players need to be focused.

“The boys are responding well and have really stepped from when they first started together.”

The arrival of new Fijian national football coach Christophe Gamel has already made an impact as he watched the young players in action at the Fiji Football Academy in Ba on Saturday.

“I think the new coach has come at the right time, it’s good to get his take and how we are preparing,” he said.

“He watched our boys and shared on and what we can do more to play effectively.

“The boys are excited to be travelling and looking forward to the tournament next month.”

The Fijian U17 team will depart on January 15.

The Fijian U17 will play in the World Cup qualifiers in Tahiti in February for a spot in the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup in India on October 6-28.
