Editorial

If the nurses responsible for a video showing them joking about patients thought it was fun they were wrong.

It was in poor taste, unprofessional, unacceptable and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

While the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar, has gone into damage control mode, the video has caused considerable damage to the nursing profession. The unfortunate part is that a majority of nurses do not agree with the action of this small silly group.

Those responsible should be held to account for their action as a reminder that this type of activity cannot and must not be tolerated.

The seriousness of this video is highlighted by Ms Akbar in her strong  statement yesterday. All nurses should take it seriously.

She said: “The contents of the video are disturbing and I have asked the Director of Nursing to initiate a detailed and urgent investigation.

“At this stage, I would also like to offer the ministry’s sincere apologies to any patients or members of the public who may have been offended by the behaviour portrayed, which I know is not typical of the many dedicated nurses working in our health system.

“I am sure the staff involved did not intend to show contempt for their patients, but that is no excuse for the conduct shown on this video.

“The ministry continues to nurture a workforce that is professional, caring and shows respect and compassion for patients.

“Incidents such as this are not consistent with that approach and highlight the need for staff to be aware at all times of how they are seen by their patients and the public.

“I know many nurses will also be disappointed that members of their noble profession appear to have been willing to participate in such behaviour.

“This incident is also a reminder to all the medical professionals to comply with the Civil Service Code of Conduct and as such any behaviour that undermines the professional standards within the Civil Service will not be condoned.”

The video creates the impression that nurses do not really enjoy their work, because of the “patient smells” portion of the jingle.

The ministry has conducted a series of professional development courses and seminars that stressed the importance of patient care. It promotes a holistic and professional approach to nursing not the arrogant and cavalier attitude portrayed by the video.

We hope the video does not reflect the true feelings of those nurses in their attitude towards their work.

If unprofessional practices still exist, we are confident that Ms Akbar will nip them in the bud.
