MSAF Holds Consultation Meeting With Seafarers

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) held a meeting with Seafarers and the Fiji Seafarers Union to clarify issues regarding revalidation of Certificates of Competency (COC) and Certificates of Proficiency (COP),and upgrading of COC and COP to International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW) Manilla 2010 Amendments.

The meeting was at the Government Shipping Services (GSS) Headquarters with GSS seafarers on 03 January 2017, and at the Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd Headquarters in Walu Bay with other seafarers on 04January 2017.

“This was an important meeting to ensure seafarers and other stakeholders understand the new requirements that need to be met to revalidate their certification so that Fiji adheres to international standards,” said MSAF CEO, John Tunidau, who was part of the meeting.

This meeting was the first of its kind between MSAF and seafarers.

MSAF provided guidance to Fiji Seafarers on the various courses that applies to the various capacities of COC and COP.

Participants witnessed a presentation conducted by MSAF Manager Safety, Compliance and Response, Captain Philip Hill, on the various requirements on upgrading certification to meet the new amendments.

The STCW Convention, 1978 and 1995 STCW Code, has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains new training requirements which must be completed, for certifications to be recognized.
