Young Vocea Continues Family Tradition

Sixteen-year-old Matila Vocea is ready to continue from where her mum and former national netball captain Vasiti Setuata left off.
Her aunties Timaima Vulimailaucala and Tuipulotu McLennan also donned the national netball colours and did our country proud.
The Drekeniwai lass from Cakaudrove told SUNsports yesterday that she has learned a lot from her mum.
“I learnt everything from her,” she said.
“The way to shoot, the game plan, how to read the game because she has been teaching me at home at our backyard and anytime we get I ask her to help me do some drills, footwork and all those skills.”
Vocea said her mum is the source of her inspiration as she looks up to her for any sporting skills.
“Mum really supported me through thick and thin and I owe her my success. Netball and volleyball are two different sports, it’s aggressive and that is one thing that has made me stronger.”
Vocea said through sports she was able to manage her time well.
“Time management is where I had to balance school and training and that was difficult.”
She is now looking forward to today’s clash against powerhouse Australia.
“I’m kind of scared because I have been out for a long time so coming back to the court is sort of amazing,” Vocea said.
The Suva Grammar School student has been offered a two-year scholarship to study and play for One Hill Tree Secondary School in New Zealand.
“So after the series I’ll be heading there but for the time being I am concentrating on the task ahead.”
