The Fijian Under- 21 team put up a gallant performance against Australia in the Digicel Punjas International Netball Series at the Vodafone Arena last night

Even though they lost 69-33, the Fijians won the last quarter 13-12.

Coach Vicki Wilson was impressed with her girls’ performance.

“I thought the effort was great from the girls,” Wilson said.

“But what was pleasing was our final quarter performance. And to win 13-12, we created history by becoming the first Fijian team to win a quarter against Australia.

“We achieved what we set out to get and all the 12 players thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. And they’ll be better for having that opportunity to get out there and test themselves against some of the best players in their age group.”

Goal-shooter Vilisi Tavui and goal attack Maliana Rusivakula were tireless and captain Episake Gaunavinaka led by example.

“It’s a challenge to be consistent in all quarters. I thought young Laisani Waqa came out well and was strong in midcourt. She got better and better and I thought we were all well led by captain Episake and Verenaisi Sawana did extremely well in the first quarter.

“We were stunned a little bit by the penalties but we needed to adjust.

“I thought Rusivakula was very clever and our center passes improved but we still need to work on our sideline throw-ins.”

Meanwhile, Australian coach Tania Obst was pleased with their first game.

“Fiji came back in the last quarter and that’s why we are here, to learn.”
