She goes by the stage name ‘Sassy’ and has made a name for herself in the local music scene.

One of her songs is currently playing on local radio stations, 2DAY FM and Legend FM called ‘Walk towards my light’.

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Sassy, whose real name is Bex Nabota, moved to Fiji three years ago and has been performing with some of local bands, such One 2 Eight and KKU.

“My three children are half Fijian so that’s the reason why I decided to move here,” she said.

Growing up in a musical family in New Zealand, Sassy sang in church and was part of an orchestra where she played the violin.

She has a Bachelor in Music in Jazz and later became a music teacher.

“My genre is more into soul, jazz, funk and reggae and I’m also a songwriter and I can sing in iTaukei as well,” she said.

Sassy was part of the featured artists who paid tribute to guitar legend, Tom Mawi, last year. She said she was honoured to be part of the event.

“There is so much untapped talent in Fiji and there’s potential for artists to work together more.”

She said artists need to come together and share their gifts and experiences.

“Viewing music as a professional career is still a challenge. Artists need regular work to survive,” she said.

She has performed in Vanuatu, Tonga, Australia, New Zealand, and around Fiji with the Uprising festival, Tagimoucia festival, and the One Love Family Fiesta in Sukuna Park.

Her advice to young musicians in the industry is to always stay positive, despite the challenges, to be true to themselves and to treat music like a business and to always have a strategy plan in place.

She is currently on a few music videos and singles, collaborating with local band, Naseda.
