Update On Somosomo Village, Gau Island

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services, continues to monitor the health conditions of those who were affected through the fish poisoning incident on Somosomo village in Gau last week.
The health staff are providing the needed care to ensure those affected are able to recover well.
They have been also been advised about having adequate hydration and to be cautious with what they decide to eat, especially to avoid any fish/fish products for the next few months as it could trigger the same symptoms again.
The Ministry’s priority is to ensure that those who may appear to be at risk will be carefully monitored and treated as required.
Meanwhile, at a press conference this week, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Rosy Akbar said, “We do apologise to the families who have lost their loved ones but as part of our service delivery we did all we could do.
I would like to thank the nurses and the doctors responsible for treating those patients and once again we do offer my sincere condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this incident.
“Finally, reflecting on both these incidents and the incidents which has been brought to us in the past few months, I would like to once again put on the record my appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and all health professionals staff throughout the country.
They work through good times, they work in challenging times, they work in difficult and remote environments, but at all times we have to ensure that all Fijians have access to the care they need, when they need it and public can be assured of that, we will do everything within our means, within our capacity to provide services to our fellow Fijians.”
