Gareth Baber is a down-to-earth person and aims to connect with ordinary Fijians during his tenure as the Vodafone Fijian 7s coach.

Like Fijians, he goes to church on Sunday, loves rugby and seafood.

Yesterday, the Welshman attended morning service at Nauluvatu Methodist Church in Suva and took part in Holy Communion with the congregation.

“I came from a Christian background and I was taught to go to church in Cardiff, Wales on Sunday,” Baber said.

“It’s important you go to church. When you travel the world and you look for things that obviously connect you to your family and home, going to church is one of those. And it’s great to be attending my first Sunday service here in Nauluvatu.”

Vodafone Fijian 7s team manager Jone Niurua said Baber was craving for some seafood.

And as his manager, he was delighted to host the Welshman to a family lunch.

“The congregation wants to host him to a Sunday feast but this would happen at a later date,” Niurua said.

The Nukutubu, Rewa, native said Baber was excited to attend church and spoke highly of the Welshman as a very down-to-earth person who connected easily with the people.”

Meanwhile, Baber enjoyed the Fiji Rugby Awards Night at Novotel Suva Lami Bay on Saturday.

“It was a good evening and I enjoyed it and good to see the effort by Fiji Rugby in recognising the work put in by all stakeholders.”

Sevens captain Osea Kolinisau won the Player of the year in the 7s category (male).

“The award goes out to the management of the team as they have been working behind the scene and for supporting us,” Kolinisau said.

The Vodafone Fijian 7s squad returns to camp at the Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Harbour today.
