The Vodafone Fijian Under- 17 football team flew out to New Zealand yesterday.

The Shalen Lal-coached side are on a three-week tour playing four build up matches to prepare for the OFC U17 Championship in Tahiti next month.

Lal told SUNsports they were looking forward to the tour and would analyse their matches one at a time.

“This is something big for the players as we play four games where we will try to study each game and ensure we perform according to plan,” he said.

“Our first game in the championship will be against Solomon Islands. All focus is on that first game and we don’t want to focus on any other game right now. We will put in a team that will go out and do their best for Fiji.”

Fiji Football Association vice-president and national team director Tarunesh Reddy said the exposure was the most important element the team needed.

“We planned this tour to New Zealand a couple of months back and the young players need this sort of exposure. They will be playing four matches in the next three weeks.

“The coaches will also see where more work needs to be done. We are taking two coaches with the team.”

Reddy said the trip would be beneficial to the team as they were hoping to work on their mistakes.

“We hope to learn and improve on our mistakes before the qualification proper starts in Tahiti on February 12.”
