Serupepeli Uru, 20, won the Player the Year (secondary school category) during the Fiji Rugby Union Awards Night at Novotel Suva Lami Bay on Saturday.

Uru, who played for the Ratu Kadavulevu School Under-19 team last year and who will be attending the Fiji National University this year, was delighted after receiving the award from Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“I was surprised when I was nominated and to win it is extra special,”he said.

“I thank God and I will continue to challenge myself physically, mentally and spiritually.”

The Namoli, Lautoka, native and son of former national 7s rep Tuidriva Bainivalu,   was a member of the RKS U18 team that won the Deans Trophy in 2015.

“One of my main challenges is training and sometimes I start to lose focus. But overcame that by praying and motivating myself not to give up.

‘No matter what life throws at you, no matter how big the obstacle, remember to be strong and work hard which is what keeps me going.

Meanwhile, Lote Sadranu who hails from Visama, Tailevu, won the Match Official of the Year and he thanked Patrick Gock for having faith in him.

“I thank the Lord for the award and I am very happy.  I dedicate this achievement to my family, referees association and Gock for his support.”
