Nervous yet excited is how three school teachers are feeling taking up their new posting in maritime schools.

Sylvia Nakaicalia, 21, Maria Yavala, 21, and Makarita Rasiga, 23, are Corpus Christi Teachers College graduates and all of them are looking forward to what island life has to offer.

Ms Nakaicalia, originally from Naitasiri, will be posted to Yasana-i-Ra district school in Moala, Lau.

“I’m excited yet nervous about this new posting and I’ll definitely miss my family,” Ms Nakaicalia said.

She has three other siblings. She leaves on board the Lomaiviti Princess II at 6am today for Moala, Lau.

Originally from Vanua Levu, Ms Yavala will be posted to Naitauba Primary School in Naitauba Island in Northern Lau.

“It’s the first time I’m leaving home for the islands and I’ll definitely miss home but I’m ready to take up the challenge,” said Ms Yavala.

She said it would be interesting to compare island life with city life and how she would be able to adapt to the new environment.

She is the second eldest of nine siblings and attributes her achievement to her parents.

She left for Lau at 6pm on board the Lomaiviti Princess IV and will reach Taveuni today. There she will board another boat bound for Naitauba Island.

Ms Rasiga, of Verata, Tailevu, will be posted to Ketei Primary School in Totoya Island,  Lau.

“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher but I never thought I’d be teaching in the islands, but I’m excited,” said an emotional Ms Rasiga.

Ms Rasiga said one of the challenges would be living alone in the teacher’s quarters on the island and leaving home for the first time.

She was raised by a single father and has four other siblings. She attributes her success to her dad who has supported her throughout her life.

Ms Rasiga leaves this morning on board the Lomaiviti Princess II bound for Totoya, Lau.

All three teachers will be teaching at the primary school level and are contracted for one year under the Ministry of Education.
