Give Way For Discharging Vessels

The chief executive officer (CEO) Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) Vajira Piyasena has called on all vessels not discharging cargoes and passengers at Port Muaiwalu to move to anchorage.
This is to make way to vessels that are arriving to discharge or load passenger or cargo.
By doing so he said they believed they could reduce the congestion at the local wharf.
Reports had been received on vessels not discharging cargoes berthing at the wharf.
“Priority for berthing should be given to vessels arriving to discharge cargoes and passengers,” Mr Piyasena said.
The Fiji Sun visited the Muaiwalu Port on Monday afternoon and saw some vessels berthing, but not discharging cargoes or passengers.
Most vessels are leaving for the islands to take back passengers, who spent Christmas in Viti Levu, and teachers and students going back to their schools.
Most shipping companies are prioritising teachers and students going back to the islands for the start of 2017 school year.
They had left the islands for Christmas and New Year in Viti Levu.
Some new teachers are going to the islands for their first posting.
