Beekeepers in Fiji are benefiting from efforts by Fiji Crop and Livestock Council (FCLC) in obtaining New Caledonia aid that has provided wax foundation sheets.

This is essential in the production of honey in beehives, according to John Caldeira, president of the Fiji Beekeepers Association.

“Because of Cyclone Winston many of the beekeepers had lost a number of beehives,” he said.

“That is not only affecting their livelihood, but because of reduced production, has limited the amount of honey available in the marketplace.”

Mr Caldeira said the beekeepers are grateful to the people of New Caledonia for this gift that is expected to increase the 2017 honey production by close to 125 tonnes, or approximately $47,000 more at the farm gate.

He said most of the beekeepers in the affected areas have worked to strengthen their surviving beehives.

By protecting their hive infrastructure from further damage, they are better positioned for the 2017 season.

The gift from New Caledonia has certainly helped towards this end.

FCLC chief executive Jiu Daunivalu said the Council would continue its efforts to help the beekeepers.

“The aid from New Caledonia is a result of an ongoing relationship with our island neighbour that is focused on strengthening agriculture in Fiji.”

Their successful experience in developing their own commercial agriculture sector that is one of the most successful in the region, has been a major benefit to FCLC,” she added.

“This is both in sharing their experience as well as providing funding that is helping to further develop our 12 commodity associations that make up the Council.”
