To see the smiles of your children and to work with you to help build a better Fiji is the highlight of my job, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told parents and teachers yesterday.

He made these remarks during the opening of the new Jeremiah College in Tacirua, Tamavua.

The Ministry of Education had injected $40,000 for the construction of a new building with two classrooms for Year 9 students catering 37 students, four teachers and a principal.

He congratulated the pioneering students of Jeremiah College in making history.

He urged them take care of the school, respect it and do their duty in paving the way for the generations of students that would follow.

Mr Bainimarama said the school’s opening marked the start of an educational journey that would carry their children and the many generations to come into a new era of knowledge.

“This new school is one of many developments throughout Fiji that my Government is working hard to bring into our communities,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“It is so that every Fijian has an equal shot at bettering their lives, and my Government is working equally hard on the global stage to protect all the progress we have already achieved in that regard.”

He said in order to keep pace with the rapid development, the next generation needed to be equipped with skills and knowledge that met with the demands of the 21st Century.

“The past government failed to make your community a priority but let me assure you all that those days are over.

“My Government does not simply talk about the importance of education; we make access to quality education a reality.

“Through our free education initiative for Years 1 to 13, our free text books and fares for travelling students, all across our islands students have been able to attend school without burdening their families with financial worry.

“We have delivered on our promises and there is no greater evidence of that than in the confident smiles of school children all throughout our islands,” Mr Bainimarama said.
