Fijian Barbarians 7s coach Josateki Savou said five of his players deserved to be included in the Vodafone Fijian 7s team for the second leg of the World Sevens Series in Wellington and Sydney.

The players, who arrived yesterday with the team after competing in the Sudamerica Rugby Sevens tournament in Uruguay and Chile, are skipper Amenoni Nasilasila, Alivereti Veitokani, Mesulame Kunavula, Nacanieli Labalaba and Kalioni Nasoko.

“The biggest gain for us is five players have been included in the squad,” Savou said.

“I think the players are ready for national duties because they fared well on tour.

“They deserved the call up by coach Gareth Baber.”

He said Nasilasila should provide stiff competition to Seremaia Tuwai.

“Amenoni should battle Tuwai for the playmaker and scrumhalf positions.”

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor welcomed the team at Nadi International Airport.

He added there would be more Barbarians tour in future.

“The tour is for those players who miss out making the national side. It is an opportunity given for them to prove themselves playing in international tournaments,” O Connor said.

“We’re also happy because the organisers were able to fund our trip. The boys proved themselves and rose to the occasion.”
