Water, Road Works On Rabi ‘Near Completion’

Restoration works on Rabi Island in the wake of Tropical Depression 04F last month continues and are near completion.
Rabi Council administrator, Karia Christopher, said a team from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) were carrying out rehabilitation works on the island.
He said roads and water supply on the island were severely affected from flooding and landslides caused by the depression.
“There were parts of the road which were blocked after the landslide and that have been cleared,” Mr Christopher.
“At the moment, there are no heavy machineries on the island, but the clearing of the roads have been completed and FRA is now addressing other issues.”
Residents said the road was a big issue last Christmas where they had to use boats to travel.
In an earlier statement, FRA’s general manager network operations and maintenance, Aram Goes, said machinery to work on the road was expected to arrive on Rabi this year.
Water has been restored in some parts of the island as officials from the Vatunibale Water Authority of Fiji depot in Labasa continues their rehabilitation works.
“Four of our major intakes were washed out and lots of pipes were damaged in most parts of the island disturbing our water supply,” Mr Christopher said.
“Now the main water service to Nuku, (the Government station) here has been restored and these officers will continue to work in the other villages.”
There are four villages on the island.
