Asian athletes want to participate in the 2016 Oceania Athletics Championships in Suva on June 29-1 July.

Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan Junior said the participation of Asian athletes would no doubt boost the competition.

“The Oceania championship is the qualifier for the  in London in August,” Rodan Junior said.

“Japan and Taiwan athletes are keen to take part.”

Rodan said they were focussing on improving field and long distance events during the weekly competition at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

“It’s the third competition this year and more children are involved which is encouraging.

“We also have athletes clocking best times like Samuela Railoa recording 10.8sec in the 100metres and also won 400m with a time of 48.8 sec.

“In the girls’ division Elenoa Sailosi and Heleina Young also had good times in the women’s 100m 12.6sec and 12.5sec respectively.

AF is also looking forward to the opening of Lautoka’s Churchill Park.

“We look forward to testing the new track in Lautoka and moving the competition to the western division,” Rodan added.
