A women’s group in the Northern Division now has a goal of empowering more of its women.

The Labasa Women Forum (LWF) is hoping that women can form more clubs to bring about empowerment.

This non-political group met yesterday at the Labasa Sangam shed and talked of ways to reach out to the women at the grassroots level.

The forum treasurer and programme co-ordinator, Ranju Ram, said one of the ways which they had addressed many women related-issues was during the World Women’s Day celebration.

“We have been organising this event since 1989 and today we have 60 registered women clubs with us,” she said.

“We have planned to revive many other projects such as baby show, secondary school quiz competition, providing educational-related scholarships to the poor and needy children and many more.”

Through the increasing number of awareness programme, she said many women came from the traditional system of being only confined to perform the daily role of a wife and mother.

“Women have been empowered to use their talents and skills and further develop it. Then slowly they have opened up their own small businesses,” Ms Ram said.

“We have more women as market vendors and some have ventured into tailoring business and other businesses while at the same time they perform their roles at home as well.”

The forum is calling on women in settlements and villages to form a club and work together with them to start an income generating project. This could help support them and their children in times of need.

The club has been running for the past 28 years. It has 12 members.
