Reversing Truck Allegedly Kills Electrician

A self-employed Nadi electrician was killed on Friday night from an alleged reversing truck at the Sonaisali Food Hall car park along the Queens Road.

The deceased, 38-year-old Salesh Kumar was a self-employed businessman believed to be staying by himself at Nadovi.

Police spokesperson Ana Nasoro said a 48-year old driver was alleged to have been reversing his truck when he hit Mr Kumar, who was crossing behind.

A neighbour only known as Ravneel said Mr Kumar was to have met a woman yesterday with the intention to marry her.

“He was previously married but divorced and I had made arrangements for him to meet the woman today (Saturday),” Mr Ravneel said.

He said Mr Kumar left him at around 9pm saying he was going to the mall.

He was later told Mr Kumar was hit by the vehicle at around 9.30pm.

“His parents lived in Suva and he was renting a home alone at Nadovi and was a licensed electrician,” Mr Ravneel said.

Unconfirmed reports said the victim was trying to cross behind the truck without him noticing the truck reversing.

According to Police reports the driver allegedly drove off leaving the deceased lying on the ground.

A woman saw the victim and raised the alarm and he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect is in custody at the Nadi Police Station as investigations continue.

Ms Naisoro said information received was unclear at this stage and police were continuing with their investigations.

She said a post mortem on the deceased would be done later this week.
