Unknown First Light Taveuni became the first team from Taveuni to win the Mana Whey Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, yesterday.

The team comprised farmers in the Garden Island returned home $20,000 richer.

What happened: Winger Leone Lomaloma scored twice in the 14-10 victory over Wardens in the Cup final.

The 26-year-old Bureta, Ovalau native was impressive and was in electrifying form.

Wardens came back with two tries to J Kirinabiu and Kini Namoua but failed to kick a conversion.

First Light Taveuni coach Filikesa Ratu said their aim was to win a major tournament in Viti Levu.

“We played with big teams and I trained the boys so that they can play well,” he said.

He said a prayer group called Lion of Judah is sponsoring the team.

The side upset defending champions Police 19-5 in the Cup quarter-final, beat Crow Nest Yasawa 17-10 in the semi-final while Wardens beat Uluinakau 29-12 in the quarter-final, beat Army 19-5 in the semi-final.

Team captain Lemeki Tulele said, “I thank the Lord for the win today. We couldn’t have won without his guidance and his protection. This is all in God’s plan.

“We have been preparing for about a month for this tournament. We are from different villages in Taveuni.”
