The Vodafone Fijian 7s team are going in for a tough battle against Japan in their pool clash of the Wellington 7s on Saturday.

This is because the Japanese will be coached by former New Zealand sevens assistant coach Damian Karauna who has replaced Tomohiro Segawa.

Karauna, 41, was New Zealand’s assistant coach at the Rio Olympics.

He told the Japan Times, that he intends to build the team up for the 2020 Olympic Games and he has based this on Japan’s upset win over New Zealand in last year’s Olympics.

“After the success in Rio, our team will continue to grow by developing new players and achieving consistent results,” he told.

Segawa, who led Japan to a fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympics was not happy with the decision for him to be replaced.

“My next aim was to win a medal at the Tokyo Games, and to be told I’m leaving despite having such motivation was frankly disappointing,” Segawa said.

“I believe the JRFU judged that a next step was needed in order to win a medal in 2020. Deep down I’m strongly fixated on continuing to work and my dream is a Japan sevens team winning a medal in the Olympics. I take pride in having this passion more than anyone. I’ll keep studying hard and if I have a chance I’d like to come back to work in sevens.”
