A 27-year-old man was handed a suspended sentence for three years, after he was convicted of stealing bed sheets from his employer.

Netani Tawake, a former security officer at a hotel on Sonaisali Island, faced one count of theft.

He was sentenced by Nadi Magistrate, Siromi Turaga yesterday.

Magistrate Turaga told Tawake that it did not matter if had paid the amount, but he stole from his employers and this was a breach of trust.

He warned that the imprisonment penalty for theft is 10 years.

However, Magistrate Turaga said the convicted person was a first offender and he had shown remorse for his actions.

In mitigation, Tawake said that this was the first and last time he would appear in court and he had learned a lot of lessons during his remand period of two days last November.

He was found in possession of two bed sheets, the property of his employers valued at $220 in November 23 last year.

Tawake’s casewas reported to the hotel’s chief security officer who then handed him over to Police. Edited by Caroline Ratucadra
