six-week insurance awareness and education campaign revealed that 12 per cent of Fiji’s adult population have some form of insurance.

This was explained at a media briefing session held at the Reserve Bank of Fiji yesterday.

Tower Insurance Fiji general manager Sarah-Jane Wild said the aim of the campaign was to gather data on the number of people who were insured. “The next step would be is to look at ways in which we can address this,” Ms Wild said.

“We would need to look at the products that are available and see which one best suit the various group of people.

“Not everybody owns a car, or a house, so we need to get people to insure themselves and a life insurance because people need to protect themselves.” She added the campaign was widespread using television, radio, and newspapers.  “The different forms of media targeted the different groups. So those in the rural and the maritime areas would have to be covered with these forms of media.”

The findings of the campaign highlighted that after the campaign, knowledge of the insurance products improved significantly.

Reserve Bank of Fiji governor Barry Whiteside said one way to reach people was through personal stories.

“Stories like that of Ms Veisamasama convey a strong message to people and it really changes the attitude of people towards insurance.”

The campaign which started on October 5, 2016 and ended on November 11, 2016 was spearheaded by the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
